Since we started we have been busy, so Jim Poyner Photography is more than one person. We learn from each other, swap ideas, experiment and we're genuinely competitive about doing the very best job possible for our clients.

I have been taking pictures since I was 9. I had my own darkroom from age 11 then started dabbling in digital when living in the Scottish Highlands and all the darkroom chemicals kept freezing.
Prior to full time photography work, I was a regional Arts Officer in the Highlands, and a Community Action officer (arts) in Glasgow using the photography and visual arts to address community issues. I have been running Jim Poyner Photography in York for 8 years and apart from Fencing and poor attempts at gardening, photography is my only hobby and I bloody love it. As well as our digital beasties we use for work, holiday snaps are collected via my trusty medium format Mamiya 330 and a well used collection of rare Polaroid cameras.
As well as our weddings, portraits and commercial work, I teach at out of school clubs for hard to reach / excluded children, offer subject specific master-classes to 6th form students and am a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) Ambassador for NYBEP, helping school children engage with science through having fun with photography
I live in York with my wife and 3 children, the eldest of which, at age 6 is becoming a very good, if bossy photographer.

Katie won the photography prize at Lincoln University and has been with us ever since. Her knowledge of American teen dramas and Harry Potter movies is endless. She drives an old red sportcar, loves good shoes and only occasionally cries at weddings - though she can still take wonderful pictures even so. Katie is married and has a cat called Giles, who is insane.

Joe runs his own company but works for us when we need extra skills on the job or if I feel I need someone around to wind me up all day and be very cheeky to my wife. He claims to have invented photography, loves designer socks and runs 10k in the time it takes me to run 5.

A charming film stills, product and commercial photographer, has joined us, bringing new skills, a Landrover and a very organised big box of tricks. He can light anything, anywhere beautifully and is a fantastic addition to the gang.

Natalie is now heading up the admin front, working from Castle Poyner usually with an earl gray in her hand and is adding extra elegance and local gossip, which we love. Her favourite things are mini Snickers bars, Moomins, Byzantine pottery and BBC Radio 6Music.
